Now that you have braces, please avoid hard foods, sticky foods, and foods high in sugar content. Our skilled orthodontists and team put together a list below of the foods to avoid, as well as some tips and tricks to abide by, while wearing our Topeka and Lawrence braces.
- Nuts (cans of nuts, sacks of nuts, sunflower seeds, candy bars with nuts, etc.)
- Ice (not even if you’re careful)
- Frozen Candy Bars
- Taffy (Laffy Taffy, Bit of Honey, etc.)
- Caramels (single piece of caramel or candy with caramel in it, etc.)
- Milk Duds
- NO GUM (sugarless or not)
- Fruit Roll-Ups
- Gummy Bears
- Jelly Beans
- Tootsie Rolls
- Beef Jerky
- Hot Tamales
- Jolly Ranchers (not even to suck on)
- Jaw Breakers (Not even to suck on)
- Any kind of Suckers (not even if you’re careful)
You may have soda and other foods with sugar, but please brush after you have eaten.
Take hard chips and hard taco shells and break them into pieces first.
Cut or tear apart tough and thick breads first before you eat them.
Examples would be french bread or thick pizza crust.
Scrape corn off the cob first before you eat it.
Be careful of meats with bones (chicken, ribs, pork chops). Judge the distance to the bone before biting into the meat.
Popcorn is ok if you eat only the fully popped kernels.
Raw fruits and vegetables (apples, carrots, celery, etc.) need to be cut into bite size pieces first.
